This solution has similar characteristics to pallet racking systems with an overhead loft, although the functionality derived from its smaller structural size means it is better suited to more straightforward applications.

An elevated floor, accessed by stairways positioned according to the planned use, is installed over a conventional, manually loaded shelving system and provides an equivalent surface area.

All open areas of the elevated floor are protected with safety guardrails; these can also incorporate different types of door which facilitate forklift truck access and the storage of palletised goods in the loft area.

Given the structure supporting the loft is not as strong as the ones used for mezzanines or lofts installed over pallet racking systems, the normal applications for this solution must take into account it has a lower load-bearing capacity.

These storage areas are therefore suitable for lightweight facilities, such as small offices or work areas, that respect the underlying structure’s load capacities. They can also be used to store bulk materials and products in containers or which are hard to store in shelves due to their awkward dimensions. Furthermore, these lofts are often employed for auxiliary tasks to complement the logistical management of the goods stored in the shelving below.

Finally, lightweight shelving can be installed for less demanding load requirements; however, if warehouse operations call for the same system to be implemented on the upper and lower floors, then the installation of manual loading with elevated aisles is a better, more efficient option.

Very low installation and maintenance costs; the initial outlay is recovered almost immediately as the system can be put to various uses that complement the warehouse’s equipment.

It is a very profitable solution for warehouses with low roofs as it effectively provides a useful new intermediate floor without having to assume the considerable cost of buying extra land.

The overhead loft’s design means it can be assembled over the supporting shelving at a later date or, if necessary, the whole solution can be installed in phases so the investment can be spread out to adapt to the company’s financial resources.

Since it follows a configurable and demountable modular design, extending, modifying and customising the system’s arrangement and capacity are quick, straightforward tasks that do not require any further investment.

In terms of its construction, the manually loaded shelving with overhead loft is a simple structural system; this makes it an effective, long-lasting solution as it unlikely to suffer from technical obsolescence and can be used almost indefinitely with very little maintenance.
